'Leadership in Focus'

Council 017Welcome back to a brand new year in 2012, one that promises many challenges across Victoria as we implement the third wave in educational initiatives. As the year progresses the State Government will make critical announcements about future directions and positions in the structure of the Victorian education system. The VPA has a critical role in the ongoing consultative processes so the principal class voice is heard.

Approximately 84% of P-21 BER projects are reaching conclusion and schools are using the innovative teaching spaces. Cleaning these spaces still presents a challenge for individual school budgets. The defects time is very limited so ensure that you follow the correct process. Overall, Primary schools throughout Australia have really benefited in this economic stimulus program and we have learnt valuable lessons in the delivery of buildings in schools. Now are trying to optimise the use of open learning spaces.

The VPA Board and Council have produced 45 Position Papers coming from Hot Topics and member concerns. It is vital to represent the views of members - refer to Position Papers. The latest Position Papers, both newly developed and revised, address the issues of Principal Support, Notebook Leasing, Cleaning Provision in Schools, Occupational Health and Safety Requirements, Staff Referral, Student resource Package Funding, Student Support Services and the Victorian Institute of Teaching.

Victoria is hosting an international conference -  APPA/NZPF Trans Tasman Conference- Our Primary Purpose Leading Learning, at the Melbourne Convention Exhibition Centre on September 18-21, 2012. We have already booked a stellar cast of speakers including Andy Hargreaves (Canada), Pasi Sahlberg (Finland), Yong Zhao (China) Lucinda Hartley (Australia), Jacqui Cooper  and Kishore Mahbubani (Singapore).  A group discount for 4 or more people aimed at school teams or all staff members is available for a one day registration at the conference.  A 20% discount on a non-member one day price will apply. You can register online here.

The VPA publishes a high quality national quarterly journal Leadership in Focus, with a wide-spread circulation and growing readership of educational leaders across the country. You can gain additional copies by contacting the office.

The close alliance between Victorian Principals Association (VPA), Victorian Association of State Secondary Principals (VASSP) and Australian Principals Federation (APF) has strengthened the advocacy undertaken and support for members in Victoria. VPA & VASSP has signed a Strategic Alliance indicating the strength in partnerships.

The VPA, as a member of Australian Primary Principals Association (APPA), Australian Government Primary Principals Association (AGPPA) and International Confederation of Principals (ICP) through AGPPA has seen strong representation of VPA members on a national and international level. The work of the VPA and Victorian schools is recognised nationally and internationally with the Association hosting the APPA/NZPF Trans Tasman Conference.

The VPA has a very successful China Educational Leadership Study Tour Program operating as part of our Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to create Professional Leadership Partnerships between the Jiangsu Education Bureau and the VPA. Click here to learn more about our China tours. In 2012, through ICP connections, the VPA and VASSP have organised a Finland Study Tour in April and May. The tour will involve a 12 day program of visits to schools in Helsinki and central Finland and to the teacher training faculty and principal’s academy at Jyvaskyla University.

We continue to learn and grow together as educators across the globe.

Members are Connected, United and Powerful.

I look forward to working with and for VPA members in 2012.
